How do varifocal glasses work?

Varifocal glasses work by combining your distance and reading prescription into one lens. When you focus through a varifocal lens you will experience a graduation from the distance (top) part of the lens down to the reading (bottom) part of the lens which is a great convenience for wearers who require both distance and reading specs and constantly find themselves having to change between pairs. This could be due to the fact the your job may entail a lot of reading (close work) , computer work and the fact that you need to wear glasses just to be able to see objects that are further than a stretch of your arm.

Will I adjust to them?

In the past 10 years the success rate of these lenses has been fairly good with only some new wearers complaining of adaption problems due to the amount of distortion you experience on the peripheral of the lenses. This is due to the way the lenses are manufactured so that they can combine the prescriptions into one lens. However, in the past couple of years technology has really progressed quite dramatically and the newer designs of varifocal lenses are much more advanced allowing the wearer to experience a much wider field of vision through the lenses. This has had quite an effect on the success rate of new wearers adapting to the lenses and now stands on average at about 97% success rate compared to 80% as it was 7 years ago.
